Is Your Rug The Right Size?

The right rug helps a room feel connected and balanced. Before you buy, keep these simple guidelines in mind.

Living room: get your furniture on board. Aim to have at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug. A rug that floats beneath only the coffee table often makes the seating area feel disconnected.

Dining room: leave room to pull out a chair. Look for a rug that extends approximately 24–30 inches beyond every side of the table so chair legs stay on it when guests sit down or get up.

Bedroom: give your feet a soft landing. Aim for roughly 18–24 inches of rug beyond the sides and foot of the bed. You can position the rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, leaving the nightstands off it.

Measure your arrangement, not just your room. Your rug should suit the furniture grouping. Don’t automatically choose a smaller rug simply because the room is small.

Tape it out first. Mark the proposed rug dimensions with floor-safe painter’s tape. Check furniture placement, walking paths, and door clearance before committing.
